Best Incentive Compensation Software for Small Sales Teams

Doug Erb, Founder & CEO · Published · Last updated

Doug Erb has designed, built and run sales compensation systems since 2000, from Callidus and Trilogy through Varicent, Xactly, CaptivateIQ, Performio and SAP Commissions, and today leads Lanshore's SPM and agentic AI practice.

Key takeaways

  • For a small team, setup effort, contract terms, and minimum monthly spend matter more than feature depth.
  • Sales Cookie publishes month-to-month pricing with no contract, while Salesforce Spiff requires an annual contract and offers no trial.
  • QuotaPath's monthly platform fee includes the first five users, which sets a floor on what a very small team pays.
  • Vendor-stated rollout times range from days (Qobra, for smaller businesses) to about three weeks (Visdum), four to six weeks (Everstage), and 45 to 60 days on average (QuotaPath Growth).
  • If no one on the team can own commission administration, a managed service may fit better than any tool on its own.

For a small sales team replacing spreadsheets, six incentive compensation tools worth comparing are Everstage, Qobra, QuotaPath, Sales Cookie, Salesforce Spiff, and Visdum. Each publishes enough about pricing, terms, or setup for a small team to evaluate it. The deciding factors at this size are setup effort, contract terms, minimum monthly spend, and how well the tool fits the CRM your reps already use, not the depth of the feature list.

How we compared

We reviewed each vendor's own website on 2 October 2026 and used only what those pages say about target customer, pricing, trials, contract terms, setup, and CRM integrations. Every page we relied on is listed in the sources below, and "Not published" means we could not find it on those pages. We did not score the tools; they appear in alphabetical order, which is not a ranking.

Lanshore is an implementation partner for several platforms named here and resells none of them. Of the six, Lanshore implements Salesforce Spiff. This piece is the small-team companion to our comparison of platforms for replacing commission spreadsheets, which covers larger platforms such as CaptivateIQ, Performio, Varicent, and Xactly.

What a small team should weigh first

Small teams rarely fail on features. They fail on setup and ownership.

1. Everstage

Everstage's pricing page says it is "purpose-built for teams managing 20 - 30+ payees" and that most teams go live in 4 to 6 weeks. Its homepage says its own implementation team builds your commission plans. It integrates with Salesforce, HubSpot, Workday, ADP, NetSuite, and QuickBooks.

2. Qobra

Qobra says a typical rollout "is days for SMB and weeks-to-months for enterprise," that a dedicated customer success manager is included in the price, and that teams can "ship plan changes the day they're decided." Its AI agents page describes The Architect, which edits plans in natural language, and The Sales Coach, which answers rep questions such as how much a deal would pay. It integrates natively with Salesforce, HubSpot, Pipedrive, and Microsoft Dynamics.

3. QuotaPath

QuotaPath publishes its pricing. Growth is $35 per user per month plus a $525 monthly platform fee, and Premium is $50 per user per month plus an $800 monthly platform fee, with all packages billed annually. The platform fee includes the first five users, implementation, an account team, and ongoing support. Its HubSpot app lets you manage and report on commissions directly in HubSpot, and the Salesforce integration imports data from any object. QuotaPath's homepage cites a customer that "grew from a 4-person sales team to 20+" on the product.

Sales Cookie describes itself as "a powerful sales commission management solution for SMBs." Its Business plan is $40 per user per month and Business+ is $60, billed monthly per active payee with no contract and cancel-anytime terms. There is no minimum, and the first incentive plan configuration is free. A 14-day trial needs no credit card. The homepage offers a free proof of concept built from your sample data, while the pricing FAQ ties free configuration hours and proof-of-concept access to 10 or more users. Integrations cover Salesforce, HubSpot, Dynamics, Pipedrive, Zoho, QuickBooks, Xero, and Zapier.

5. Salesforce Spiff

Salesforce Spiff is "natively connected to Salesforce," with a commission estimator so reps can project earnings, commission tracing, and dispute handling in one place. Salesforce says you can "set up incentive compensation plans in days, not weeks or months." Pricing is $75 per user per month, billed annually.

6. Visdum

Visdum positions itself for mid-market and enterprise teams, but its pricing page is unusually specific for a quote-based vendor: "Typical first-year investment starts in the low five figures," billed per payee, with admins and approvers not counted. It states an average go-live of about three weeks and offers a free proof of concept for complex plans. It connects to HubSpot, Salesforce, QuickBooks, and NetSuite.

When a small team needs something else

Two situations call for a different answer. First, if your plans are simple, larger platforms may not be built for you: Performio's own pricing page says it is "not ideal for simple, flat commission structures." Second, if no one on the team can own comp administration, a tool alone will not fix the problem, because someone still has to load data, check results, and answer reps. One mortgage lender Lanshore worked with had about 40 payees on 2 plans and had already bought a tool. The plan paid on funded loans with clawbacks on early payoff, and nobody on staff could configure the clawback or reconcile the loan feed; Lanshore configured the plan, built the feed, and ran the first cycles.

How Lanshore helps

Lanshore implements commission platforms for mid-market teams (see mid-market SPM implementation) and runs comp operations as a managed service. In one managed services case study, a telecom services provider ran commissions on a manual Excel system with frequent errors, no structured reporting, and no in-house resources to fix it. Lanshore took over commission operations with structured calculation runs, error controls, and standardized reporting; calculation errors dropped sharply and comp operations were covered without new headcount. Lanshore currently supports teams as small as about 10 payees under managed services, and offers a flat-fee AI comp platform for teams under 20 reps.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best commission software for a small sales team?

It depends on your CRM, plan complexity, and how much setup help you need. Sales Cookie positions itself for SMBs with month-to-month pricing, QuotaPath publishes tiered pricing with a HubSpot app, Qobra says rollouts take days for smaller businesses, and Salesforce Spiff fits teams that sell in Salesforce. Everstage and Visdum suit small teams that expect to grow into mid-market plans.

How much does commission software cost for a small team?

Among the tools compared here, three publish prices. Sales Cookie lists $40 per user per month on its Business plan, billed monthly with no contract. QuotaPath lists $35 per user per month plus a $525 monthly platform fee that includes the first five users, billed annually. Salesforce lists Spiff at $75 per user per month, billed annually. Visdum says a typical first year starts in the low five figures.

Can a small team set up commission software without a consultant?

Often, yes, for simple plans. Sales Cookie offers a free 14-day trial and says it configures your first plan free of charge, and Qobra and Everstage say their own teams handle setup. Plans with many data sources, splits, or retroactive changes still benefit from someone who has documented and tested comp logic before.

When is a small team too small for commission software?

If you pay a handful of reps on one flat rate from one data source, a well-controlled spreadsheet may still be enough. Software pays off when plans add tiers, accelerators, splits, or clawbacks, when data comes from more than one system, or when reps start disputing statements. Performio, for example, says it is not ideal for simple, flat structures.
